Amy Tobolski       “Thinking Developmentally: Supporting Adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disability”

Whether we are supporting Children or adults with IDA, having an understanding of development helps us provide appropriate and effective supports.  For children, we know that the earlier a delay is identified and addressed, the better the outcome.   For adults, gauging the person’s developmental level – sometimes referred to as their “mental age” — can inform support strategies.  Knowing where the person is at developmentally can help us make sure we are not asking too much or too little of the person.  We will look at typical development and how the brain changes over time.  We will also look at the most common factors/experiences that can affect development, particularly during childhood, that may affect the person throughout their lifetime.

The training builds on professionals’ skills when working with families where the parents have an intellectual and/or development disability.
